DIY Enforcement

Busted!

In the summer of 1988 I was driving along some of the back roads of Ensenada, Mexico. I noticed a lot of homemade Stop signs at the intersections of the less populated parts of town. This sign, found at the side of the road during the century we all just completed, reminds me of them. Gotta say, I like 'em!

  1. I don't get it. Is it that there is a fine for cars passing to closely, or driving in the same lane as cyclists, or a fine for cyclists taking the lane? I hope it isn't the latter.

  2. I agree. It's unclear which group gets the fine, the cyclists riding multiple across or the cars.

  4. i would read that sign as "bikes get a fine for not riding single file, or for otherwise impeding traffic" and think it was probably put up by someone grumpy about living on an organized ride route.

don't they ticket for riding out of the bike lane or not in single file in sausalito?

  5. The lack of clarity is what I like! It could be you, it could be the car, it could be all of the above!

I lean toward it being targeted to cyclists as Marin has an obsession about people riding single file at all times. Something about narrow, winding, scenic country roads makes Marin drivers think "Nascar!!"
